Job Description

The Environmental Working Group (EWG), a leading environmental health research and advocacy organization, seeks a Digital Copywriter for its Washington, D.C., office.

Since 1993, EWG has shined a spotlight on outdated legislation, harmful agricultural practices and industry loopholes that pose a risk to our health and the health of our environment.

Whether it's on Capitol Hill or in communities across America, we make our voices heard, changing the debate over environmental health and putting the most important people - you and your family - at the center of the conversation.

EWG is seeking a talented and creative Digital Copywriter to join our Digital team. The team is responsible for growing, cultivating and converting EWG's vast online audience, including nearly 30 million website visitors annually. As a Digital Copywriter, you will be responsible for crafting compelling and persuasive content for various digital media, including email campaigns, social media and websites. Your words will drive engagement, educate our audience, and inspire action toward our mission of protecting health and the environment.

What you will do:
  • Create persuasive and informative content for email marketing campaigns, including fundraising appeals and advocacy campaigns.
  • Collaborate with the social media team on translating our research into shareable content.
  • Develop and produce high-quality and engaging copy for EWG's websites, ensuring alignment with brand voice, values and messaging strategy. Types of copy include landing pages, calls-to-action and marketing pages.
  • Conduct thorough research on health trends, environmental issues, news and policy updates to inform content creation.
  • Edit and proofread content to ensure accuracy, consistency and adherence to brand guidelines.
  • Coordinate copy flow to ensure editors' timely review of copy.

Qualifications:
  • 2-5 years of writing experience focused on website content and email campaigns.
  • Ability to write for various audiences and media, including email, website and social media.
  • Comfort working on a range of projects from short-form (like social media captions) to longer-form (like brand positioning).
  • Detail-oriented proofreader and researcher.
  • A creative thinker and independent worker who can exercise job responsibilities with minimal oversight.
  • A professional who is skilled at accepting and incorporating feedback.
  • Flexibility to adapt writing to prescribed voice, style and format and a keen ear for tone and audience.
  • Comfort working on a wide variety of topic areas and collaborating with a highly skilled, mission-driven, diverse staff.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and work under pressure, often to tight deadlines.

Preferred qualifications:

Experience in a nonprofit or newsroom environment preferred.

Working knowledge of SEO best practices and metrics preferred.

Location: Washington, D.C., office.

Benefits and Compensation: Annual salary range of $50,000 - $70,000. Salary is commensurate with experience. EWG offers fully paid, excellent health care, paid parental leave and a tax-deferred 403(b) plan, including matched contributions. It's a casual, growing office with more than 40 engaging co-workers.
EWG's commitment to diversity and inclusion:

EWG celebrates diversity and is committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees. We are proud to foster a work environment that supports, inspires and respects all individuals. EWG does not discriminate against any employee or applicant on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, age, sex, citizenship, ancestry, marital status, family responsibilities, physical or mental disability, military or veteran status, medical condition, genetic information, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity or expression, matriculation or political affiliation, or any other protected class recognized in any of the jurisdictions where EWG has offices or employees working. We adhere to these principles in all aspects of employment, including recruitment, hiring, training, and compensation and promotion.
