This position performs a variety of routine skilled welding duties to include welding repairs, fabrications, and modifications on a variety of equipment and structures. Welds, cuts, solders, and brazes a variety of equipment and structures in the shop and at field sites. Operates acetylene and electrical welding equipment, band saws, sanders, hydraulic presses, and various hand tools to prepare work pieces. Heats, bends and straightens work pieces. Performs bead welding, tack welding, brazing, flame cutting, heat treating, plasma cutting, chipping or grinding off excess weld slag or spatter. Cleans chips and grinds cracks and joints in work pieces, using solvents, wire brush, chisel and portable grinders. Sets up and adjusts welding equipment. Drives a vehicle to and from work locations and keeps vehicle supplied with tools and materials. Operates snow removal equipment. Exercises safety in dealing with equipment and hazardous welding by-products. Participates in safety trainings. Maintains stock inventory of welding supplies and materials. Keeps minor records and performs simple administrative tasks. Performs other related duties as required.
- Welds and brazes metal to repair broken or cracked objects or to fabricate new parts and equipment;
- Uses acetylene, electric and inert gas shielded welding processes;
- Works with steel, aluminum, brass and cast iron;
- Grinds and chips paint in preparation for re-painting
- Plans and lays out the work, measures and cuts metal stock to size, cleans and assembles or positions work pieces, sets up and adjusts welding equipment, preheats, bead welding, tack welding, brazing, flame cutting, heat treating and chipping or grinding off excess weld slag or spatter;
- Performs soldering;
- Drives a vehicle to and from work locations and keeps vehicle supplied with tools and materials;
- Operates snow removal equipment;
- Maintains records and prepares reports of work accomplished and materials used;
- Instruct trades helpers;
- Exercises safety in dealing with hazardous welding by-products and participates in safety training;
- Engages in safe working practices and complies with safety programs and guidelines;
- Reports and monitors unsafe working conditions;
- Complies with safety competencies.

Note: This position is considered essential personnel for purposes of continuity of operations and may be required to respond during inclement weather or emergency situations.
- A $2,500 signing bonus is available to new county employees hired into positions requiring a CDL. Applicants must possess a valid CDL at time of application submission to be eligible.
Employment Standards
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience and training equivalent to completion of the tenth grade, supplemented by (1) completion of an acceptable apprentice-level training program with some successful experience in performing journeyman-level work, or (2) varied and responsible journeyman-level experience in the welding trade; or which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
- Possession of a valid driver's license.
- DOT Medical Card.
- Commercial driver's license (CDL) Class "B" within 6 months of hire.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, a pre-employment physical examination, and driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Welder certification.
- At least two years of experience with welding.
- Effectively communicate in English both orally and in writing,
- Experience following sketches and blueprints.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to pass pre-employment physicals. Candidate must be physically and mentally capable of performing confined space entry operations via 21" manholes with vertical descent using integral or portable ladders further requiring use of all applicable protective equipment and documentation. Hard hat, eye protection, hearing protection, safety footwear, long pants, sleeved shirt and personal fall arrest harness. Performs duties to include pushing, pulling, lifting, bending, stooping, walking, climbing in and out of catch basins and manholes (with assistance, includes removal and replacement of manhole covers weighing up to 90 pounds). All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
SELECTION PROCEDURE:
Panel interview and may include exercise.
BONUS ELIGIBILITY:
Positions within this classification that require a CDL that are general merit may be eligible for a one-time hiring incentive bonus for new county employees only. This bonus program requires a signed payback agreement between the department and employee. Must have CDL at time of hire.
